Session Abstract

Testing of cannabis products is necessary to demonstrate that the products are safe for consumption and free from harmful levels of contaminants and adulterants. Demand for testing laboratories is growing as many states have legalized medical marijuana and some have implemented specific mandates for testing protocols. Laboratories that perform analytical testing of cannabis and cannabis-derived products can become accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 for a variety of relevant tests, including cannabinoid content, terpene profile, microbiological contaminants, and residual solvents.

ISO/IEC 17025 specifies general requirements for the competence to carry out tests. It covers testing using standard methods, as well as laboratory-developed methods. Laboratory accreditation can demonstrate the laboratory's ability to produce precise and accurate test data, as well as ensure technical expertise is maintained.

Selecting an accredited laboratory to perform testing on cannabis products benefits the growers and dispensaries, as well. Accredited laboratories generate reliable, consistent results, backed by quality control testing, method validation, measurement uncertainty, and proficiency testing.
